St. Mary's Hospital in Sechelt is the only hospital on British Columbia's Sunshine Coast, serving a population of more than 29,000. The Hospital underwent a drastic 36,000 square foot, patient-focused expansion, setting a new standard for health care in the region. Several aspects of this project honour the history and legacy of the site. The Sechelt First Nations People have a long association with St. Mary's, having donated land for the original hospital. During the process of developing the wayfinding program, the Cygnus team collaborated closely with Vancouver Coastal Health, the project architect Perkins+Will, and stakeholder groups including the Sechelt Indian Band. Our team was successful in designing a program that honours, reflects and incorporates local Coast Salish themes, while serving the functional needs of the hospital facility and contributing towards positive patient and visitor experiences.
