Campus Wayfinding Master Plan

The University of Calgary chose Cygnus to develop their campus wayfinding master plan. The scope included all campuses and sought to integrate the wayfinding approach with the overarching communications and brand strategy as well as the individual campus master plans. Cygnus collaborated with Scout Communications and kicked off an in depth user research process involving core university staff; student focus testing; and on-campus “intercept” interviews. The findings led the project team to identify several principles the wayfinding needed to address. As a result the master plan helps to create a sense of place by distinguishing a university district and its zones through a combination of monuments, public art, pageantry and signage. It prescribes a system of overlapping cognitive queues including colour, patterning, numbering and nomenclature, and defines a process to enable the University to utilize its own resources efficiently and cost effectively into the future.
